The National Organization

The American Legion

Today there is no accurate record of the total number of veterans' organizations, but among them all, none has grown so large or has exercised such wide influence as The American Legion. None is so intimately identified with the word "veteran"

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The American Legion's national headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, DC. In addition to thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program implementation capacities in local communities to the Legion's standing national commissions and s, the national organization has a regular full-time staff of employees.

The membership of the American Legion is comprised of men and women who have served their country on honorable federal active duty service with the U.S. Armed Forces during a hostile conflict.

Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

Our Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of every month 8:00 PM at the VFW Post 199 South Avenue, Located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and South Avenue next to the hospital parking lot.

How We Began

Not Much is known about our post history as many records may have been lost or misplaced when the post home was sold in 1962.

An application requesting a charter with The American Legion to be known as Mount Holly Post 11 was filed on July 17th, 1919. The letter was signed by 15 eligible applicants seeking membership and wishing to create an American Legion Post in Mount Holly.

The charter was issued on July 18th, 1919 to the 15 applying members.

On August 19th, 1919 a list totaling 77 members was submitted to American Legion Headquarters listing the additional members.
